Smart solutions: Wireless controls for human-centric lighting systems

Radio-controlled systems are becoming more and more important in facility management and smart home control applications. As a result, an increasing number of devices and control modules in the residential and office sectors will have to manage without wiring. LUMITECH has developed the world's first human-centric lighting system for professional applications that can be operated by radio control and in doing so has confirmed its role as a technology pioneer in the LED sector. Development of the new wireless controls was a further logical step towards extending PI-LED applications to create a holistic system. The data required for controlling the lighting can be transmitted via wall-mounted switches or an app, even over greater distances (up to 100m), and the actual system consumes very little energy. This makes installation and application easier than ever – a particular advantage for anyone wishing to retrofit their existing system or convert it into a modern biorhythmic lighting solution.

PI-LED: Vitalised, not just illuminated

With its development of PI LED technology, LUMITECH created a milestone on the way to biorhythmic lighting. PI LED technology allows highly-efficient LED illumination with good colour rendering which can be precisely adjusted anywhere along the Planck Curve. All white light tones between 2200 K (candlelight) and 8000 K (daylight in Northern regions) can be simulated accurately. In addition, various colour tones, including pastel tones,  can be generated, thus creating an endless number of lighting moods. Operation is very easy and can be controlled via a keypad or a smart phone. In 2007, LUMITECH was awarded the Austrian State Prize for Innovation for development of PI LED technology.

Chip on Board Technologie (COB)

Maximum power over a minimum area

Maximum power density in the tightest of spaces is the unique selling point of various LED products on the market today. LUMITECH has met these criteria with its chip-on-board technology. Direct mounting of the semiconductors on high-quality printed-circuit boards enables optimum thermal management and high packaging densities, resulting in long-lasting, powerful COB LED modules.

LUMITECH supplies COB LED modules with white light in a range from reddish warm white, similar to candlelight, down to cold, bluish white. In addition to the standard colour temperature range from 2700 K (warm white), 4200 K (neutral white) up to 6500 K (cold white), we also offer devices with customer-specific spectra.

  •   LUMITECH develops COB LED modules of practically any spectrum and luminous intensity. The range of available wavelengths extends from visible colours up to infra-red (e. g. 950 nm). Different chips can be arranged in any desired  combinations and controlled independently of one another, whereby the COB LED module can be equipped either with standard LED chips or with high-power LED chips of dimensions ranging from 350 x 350 μm to 1000 x 1000 μm. Both face-up technology and flip-chip variants with sub-mounting are used to produce the modules. Operating currents range from a few milliamperes to 1000 mA in the most powerful variants.


  •   The high luminous intensity of the powerful COB LED modules is achieved by a unique method of packaging the chips in the tightest space. Packaging LED chips in this way achieves high intensities while retaining a homogeneous field of illumination. This technology allows LUMITECH to achieve maximum optical performance for high-power LED applications.


  •   The chips on the board, originally without a casing, are encapsulated by applying a "Glob Top" by means of an automated dosing unit. This top protects the chip against external influences such as dust or humidity. A variety of synthetic resins based on epoxy or silicone are used for this purpose. A clear transparent encapsulation is used for monochromatic LED applications.



    Chip-on-board technology also allows optimum thermo-management, which in turn gives the COB LED modules their exceedingly long service life. To meet the respective mechanical, electronic and thermal requirements we offer PCB designs for the following substrate materials:
        •    FR4 printed circuit boards with through-contacts
        •    Metal core PCBs
        •    Ceramic PCBs

    LUMITECH considers the subject of correct cooling to be inseparable from the actual PCB design, as the heat generated has to be dissipated back through the circuit board and/or subsequently via a heat sink. This ensures problem-free operation, exceedingly long LED service life as well as stable wavelengths and intensity.






Colour conversion: The art of creating white light

Colour conversion requires a high level of competency. The challenge lies in being able to create various qualities of white light with the best possible rendering of colours. PI LED technology provides the user with the complete white light spectrum – from  cold white, through neutral white on to warm white. Any colour temperature between 2,700 K and 6,500 K and more can be individually controlled. The colour rendering index is excellent throughout at CRI > 90.

The key to this high colour fidelity and colour rendering quality is provided by LED modules which combine blue, red and white light instead of red, green and blue. An additional advantage of this method is its higher efficiency, especially in the warm white sector, where up to 100 lm/W can be achieved at 2,700 K, for example.

Along with its extensive white light spectrum, PI-LED technology is also able to achieve a wide variety of light colours in the RGB colour space. Here, too, this innovative technology has a leading edge over conventional systems, since in addition to emitting “standard colours” it is also able to achieve pastel tones.
